Being a Nurse Means Taking Care of Oneself

We applaud the nurses’ hardwork and dedication in taking care of patients from the sick to the dying. They spend extended hours in hospitals and medical facilities away from the comforts of their home and the company of their loved ones. Sometimes nurses forget to take care of their own well-being.

The nursing profession is a very demanding job and requires good time management skills to balance work and your personal life. The stress from taking care of patients and meeting the doctor’s needs can result in burnout and job strain. No wonder, the nursing profession has one of the highest turnover rates in the healthcare industry. Nurses have to follow these important tips to take care of themselves:

1. Time Management
As previously stated, nurses should schedule and organize their everyday tasks so that everything will turn out well. The chances of committing a serious mistake are high if you don’t know what to do next. Remember time is of the essence when a single second can cost the life of a patient.

2. Warm Up
Before you start your shift, make sure to warm up and have a little bit of physical exercise to keep you alert and active. Remember, you may be moving heavy medical equipment, changing your patient’s bed sheets, or running in the corridor to assist a newly arrived accident victim.

3. Balance
Being in the nursing profession is about other people’s needs ahead of yours but it is also important to keep a balance. Otherwise, you will become a patient yourself as you get sick or hurt in the process of helping others. Take care of your health as much as you take care of other people’s health.

4. Develop Good Habits
We tend to slack off a little bit when we are tired and stressed out. Never let the patient see that you are mad, frustrated, and nervous. Be a good example to patients and everyone around you by becoming a model nurse.

5. Constant Reminder
Spending time away from the family can be very hard especially for foreign nurses who go for a career in nursing abroad just to provide a better life for their families. Homesickness can also affect your work performance so it would be a good idea to call your loved ones whenever you have time to do it. In this way, you can talk about your work and get in touch with their lives.

6. Relax and Unwind
At the end of the day, there is always time to enjoy a good dinner with family and friends. Take your time to rest and recuperate because you deserve quality time for yourself. Have a good full body massage and facial therapy at your favorite day spa.
